The Reader

The Reader

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Kate Winslet, David Kross, Lena Olin, Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara

Directed By: Stephen Daldry

Released By: 22nd January 2009

Run Time: 124 mins.

Genre: Drama

The story opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair. Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life - this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna’s past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives.

It’s fascinating how literacy apparently plays a key role - huge one - in this movie. The plot between 2 lovers from different generation actually works really well. And supported with Kate Winslet’s amazing acting and David Kross’ plausible breakthrough, their affair seems even more ‘convincing’. Unfortunately, the director feels as if all of the sexual scenes and the graphic nudity are compulsory in order to create the feeling that their affair is extremely intimate. The Reader is a great movie. Its ending is sad enough to make this film stays in our mind for a while.

Seeking solitude

The start of the new year didn’t start off like how I wish it did,
but nevertheless, it wasn’t that bad.
Just that it could’ve been better,
but everything could be better right?
There’s always room for improvement you might say…But I must agree that I felt the Chinese New Year mood more than last year,
which is a good thing.
Buying new sheets, decorating and painting the house
and buying new clothes and of cos, NEW underwear… haha…
I wouldn’t say that I’m the superstitious sort,
I’m just doing it so that I can psychologically ‘feel better‘ about everything.

I did what I could to the best of my ability,
but somethings just cannot be avoided.
Squabbles and what nots are cases in point,
not typically a nice way to start the new year,
but I guess the air’s has been cleared up abit for now
and things are looking (hopefully) much rosier.
There’s so much for me to learn and grow
and I hope that there’s sufficient time involved,
asking a snail to run is quite the contrary,
but it’ll move eventually, right ?

Whoever said it was easy is probably so wrong,
it’s never easy
and yes,
it does take two to clap.
I understand how it works,
just that I have to take my time to learn,
not the hard way
and I do want to learn,
that’s needless to say.

Seeking solitude,
I understand that.

This is the best new year film. Great acting with an adequate comical feel. Pace was just right. Will recommend :)

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR 2009

WISHES EVERYONE A MOO MOO YEAR!!

My lucky plate!!

Bun (Bao) + Huat Kway = Bao Huat! (Sure strike rich!)

White Raddish (Cai Tou) = Hao Zhao Tou. (A good head start to the new year)

Leek (Se’ng) = Counting (As in counting your riches in the new year)

Nian Gao = Traditional sweet chinese cake that signifies harmony.
Stacking one atop the other signifies a “High” year.

Mandarin Oranges = Da Ji Da Li (Prosperity and wellness)

I am still going to add a bowl of rice to the plate which is a traditional way of measuring the wealth of one’s family.
This bowl of rice should come from the rice cooked for the family’s reunion dinner and on the top of the rice,
13 red-dates signifys the 13-lunar months! (2009 is a leap year in the Lunar Calendar)

Red Cliff

Red Cliff Part 2

Starring: Chi-ling Lin, Vicky Zhao, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chang Chen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai

Directed By: John Woo

Released By: 9th January 2009

Run Time: 141 mins.

Genre: Drama / War

With a budget of US$80million, “Red Cliff” is the most expensive Asian-financed film to date. The movie is based on historical records of “The Chronicles of the Three Kingdom” rather than the novel, “Romance of the Three Kingdom”. In the early third century, the land of Wu is invaded by the warlord Cao Cao and his soldiers. The ruler of Wu, Sun Quan (Chang Chen), calls on the rival warlord Liu Bei (You Yong) for help, but their two armies are still badly outnumbered. However, the strategists Zhou Yu (Tony Leung) and Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) see that Cao Cao’s army is unused to battling on the sea. With 200,000 men, Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang defeat Cao Cao’s army at the Yangtze River.

This film is undeniably one of the best Chinese production to date. With its lavish sets and stunning visuals, it looks set to take on the entertainment scene by storm. The story continues from the cliffhanger climax of the first part when Viceroy Zhou and his ally Zhu Ge Liang are preparing a full onslaught against their major nemesis Cao Cao and his hundred thousands worth of troops. The introduction is very well done and concise, giving a brief yet elaborate overview of the major highlights of the first part. This sequel surpasses the first in terms of pacing and the witty and meaningful dialogue is well penned and sophisicated. The acting and the cast is top-notch and could not have been better, with everyone having a pivotal and consequential role which brings about the narrative flow. The battle sequences in the first were awesome and it is astounding to know that the production team has outdone itself by crafting battle scenes which are even more intense and awe-inspiring than the first. The only grievance it has is that it does suffer from some historical glitches but none too serious to affect the plot. Nonetheless, it is truly an affecting and religious experience and I look forward to reliving it on the big screen again some time soon.

Most Suitable Color to Wear on CNY to Start Work‏

Click on the Image to enlarge.

So if the column shows not suitable, it means u dun need to wear.

Pray for a Miracle

We all go through tough times that we call the dark tunnel that leads to the light at the end of it.

Sometimes the dark tunnel that you’re going through closes in on you. So tightly that you can hardly breathe. Until you can barely see the light at the end of it.

You look for strength and support from your loved ones. But true colours was all you saw. Disappointment smacks you flat in the face. The tunnel constricts itself further. The light shrinks to a size no bigger than a star in the night sky.

You pray for a miracle. You wish someone would care and listen. But all you hear is silence. And all you feel is loneliness.

Aunties Galore

As you might have guessed…. I spent my whole afternoon watching youtube in the office again. And… I came across a  few of these videos… SO, ENJOY!
YEAH! She’s the one!

The TRUE VOICE OF MRT! I didn’t expect her to look like that. I thought she was some sexy goddess type, with those crimsom red lipstick and stuff. Wooo. Reality check. She’s old already. Guess, I’d never ever fantasize over the MRT voice again. Haha… Lesson learnt, what you HEAR, is not always what you THINK it is.

But it would be horrible if a young and hot girl were to sound like a 50-60 plus old hag! Eww…
Okay, still on the subject on MRTs….
This will be the MRT map a few decades later. Wow man! It would look like Hong Kong, isnt it? Gosh, I cant even read this map lor.
Ok now STILL on the subject of MRT , we move on to Aunties on MRT.

A rather nonsensical case of harrassment! Don’t you agree?
Video was posted by the Auntie, but in the end it backfired and the Auntie got flamed instead, how stupid!

And this one is the ‘Siao Lang Geng’ (mental hospital) Crazy woman. I’ve seen her in public before, scary man!

And further drifting off to the topic on Aunties, here I have for you this Auntie who’s apperently trying to squeeze into a lift, behaving like some tiger and acting all fierce.

More AUNTIE ACTION for you!
Wow, what’s up with AUNTIES and UNCLES nowadays ah?
Ok, maybe I’m wrong, they’ve always been like that. I guess aunties will stay aunties forever.

Maybe in a few years time, MOE will start having curriculum for Aunties teaching them how to behave in public.

Look into the Mirror

I am pretty sure you ain’t any better than me, seriously. I don’t need your plastic comment to teach me what to do and listen. BlahBlahBlahhhhh. I know I may be a pain in the ass sometime. But really you are a sore of my eyes, even when I don’t see you! People change, I am wondering why couldn’t you change for fucking sake!!! May be you did change but to the worst?
I am not fucking sure of what I am thinking and feeling now, you seriously piss the shit out of me. I really hate the bunch of you. I may be living in a very simple way of life now but its so much better living in you people’s complicated plastic life.Seriously, Fuck off_l_
