The Happening

The Happening

Starring: Betty Buckley, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, Mark Wahlberg

Directed By: M. Night Shyamalan

Released By: 12th June 2008

Run Time: 90 mins.

Genre: Thriller

“The Happening” is a paranoid thriller about a teacher, Elliott Moore (Mark Wahlberg), who takes his family on the run, in an attempt to survive a natural global environmental crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity. This film portrays the earth as being a victim of mankind’s doings, which causes a global backlash. An invisible neurotoxin is admitted into the air that causes people to become suicidal.

The deaths are really good and delicious, so genius! I can’t tell the story out, because all of us go for Shyamalan movie for surprises right ? All you need to know is that plants releases neurotoxin that blocks your nerves, giving you the suicide thoughts. It’s a very awesome movie touching on love, and mother Nature. By the time the story ends with the news report, you’ll either be sitting over your seat pondering about you as a threat to our Earth, or walk off in disappointment. You can choose. Expected chilling paranoia experience.

Get Smart

Get Smart

Starring: Alan Arkin, Hayden Schlossberg, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Terence Stamp, Anne Hathaway

Directed By: Peter Segal

Released By: 19th June 2008

Run Time: 105 mins.

Genre: Thriller / Comedy

In this all-new action comedy, Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. When the headquarters of America’s spy agency, CONTROL, is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his eager analyst Smart, who has always dreamt of working alongside superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). Smart is partnered instead with the only other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). As Smart and 99 get closer to unravelling KAOS’ master plan, they discover a nefarious scheme to cash in with their network of terror. With little field experience and even less time, can they save the day?

The casts are really good! It’s almost impossible to hate this movie because it’s so fun! The movie is a goofy adaptation from the T.V. show, poking fun at exagerrating spy movies. A very good throwback at serious spy movies, turning this into a satire. The story is easy to follow, and soon you’ll get sucked into the fun! Also boosts great action scenes, like nothing you’ve seen in the trailers. Steve Carrell is officially a comedian! If you loved the trailer, you’ll definitely like this movie. Trust me!

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk

Starring: Liv Tyler, Edward Norton, Tim Blake Nelson, Tim Roth, William Hurt
Directed By: Louis Leterrier
Released By: 12th June 2008
Run Time: 114 mins.
Genre: Action

Scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is living in the shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. However, the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won’t leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Upon returning to civilisation, he is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination - a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk’s own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from destruction.

I admit that when I first saw the trailer with Edward Norton in it, I was ready for another remake disappointment. But pleasantly surprised, Edward Norton pulled off the role of Bruce Banner convincingly. The story starts with the good doctor avoiding his past life by living out in a remote city in Brazil. However, the US Government has been seeking him out for the longest time, hoping to get hold of his blood to make the ultimate soldier. Hulk then proceeds to become a thriller chase adventure and many on-the-edge fight and battle scenes. The most spectacular, of course, was the battle between Hulk and the Abomination. well paced and not cheesy or cartoonish looking, the green giant smashes his way into audience’s heart. Really looking forward to the teaming up of Iron Man and Hulk (if it ever happens).

Set in the legendary world of ancient China, this is the story of Po, our unlikely hero, who enters the rigid world of kungfu and turns it upside down. Po ultimately becomes a hero by learning that if he believes in himself, he can do anything.

Kung Fu Panda is a show that should attarct a lot of people. It is a animated movie with lots of animations. It is a must- see for kids! Something like the wushu finger, a step or you could say a move. It is a wonderful film not to be missed by anyone.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Directed By: Andrew Adamson
Released By: 29th May 2008
Run Time: 145 mins.
Genre: Family / Fantasy / Action

A year after their first adventure in Narnia, the Pevensie siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) are pulled back in by Susan’s magic horn. They find that hundreds of years have passed and Narnia is now ruled by the bloodthirsty General Miraz, uncle to the true heir, Prince Caspian, who is now in exile. The children must find Caspian and help him get rid of Miraz.

I have not read the book for this movie, but the feeling comes by where you feel that this movie was largely summarised. Compared to Harry Potter, the movie lacked direction greatly, and caused loopholes in the plot. Some scenes are connected abruptly, and the movie did not really have a spectacular ending. In fact, we would all have expected the same ending if we had watched the first series of the movie. However, this movie would serve as a good family movie to watch as the storyline is quite memorable. Feel free to catch it with your families and friends but don’t expect too much from it. Good movie as a whole and the actors acted really well but you just don’t derive the spectacular feeling as from the first movie. Compared to other movies of the season, this movie is certainly worth watching, but as you go along, you would feel that the plot is also much too predictable. Just don’t be surprised at how the movie ended and feel free to appreciate the morals that it teaches. :)

Accuracy Of Death

Accuracy Of Death

Starring: Sumiko Fuji, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Manami Konishi
Directed By: Masaya Kakei
Released By: 15th May 2008
Run Time: 115 mins.
Genre: Romance / Fantasy

As the Grim Reaper in human form, Chiba appears seven days before a person dies an unexpected death. His job is to observe the person for seven days, and then decide either to ‘execute’ or ‘pass over’. Next on his list is Kazue Fujiki, who works in the complaints department of a manufacturing company. As she emerges from her office, the Reaper goes to work.

Three different looks for three different stories. A gentleman, a Yakuza (Japanese mafia), and an artist. Simple story line with deep meaning about life and death. “Life is something not unique, yet it is important” is the qoute for the movie. Something that sets our mind thinking. What I like about the movie is that it preach on fulfilling of purposes in our lives. If there is still purpose in life, it will be too early to leave the world. If you think you had fulfilled your purpose, you may leave the world without regret. Its not about the time you lived, its about fulfilling of purposes. Sort of same old meaning, but it was presented in a special way. By the way, theme song is very nice. Will be nicer if you understand japanese.
