Directed By: Ekachai Uekrongtham

Released By: 25th October 2007

Run Time: 86 mins.

Genre: Drama

Inspired by true stories and real-life characters, “Pleasure Factory” is an intimate tale involving pleasure seekers and pleasure providers in Geylang; Singapore’s popular red light district. Over the course of one night, a young cadet loses his virginity; a teenage girl gets initiated into the vice trade; and a jaded prostitute pays a young busker good money in exchange for a song he never gets to sing… Yang Kuei-Mei of Ang Lee’s “Eat Drink Man Woman” fame plays a hooker who witnesses a young girl being inducted into the trade and Thailand’s heartthrob Ananda Everingham plays an outsider who roams the streets of Geylang after an unexpected encounter at a road-side convenience store.

Perhaps the less said the better. This story about Geylang’s denizens fails on most acounts.

JBS men’s underwear ads

The majority of men’s underwear promotions feature well toned, well-endowed men strutting their stuff, or simply a close up of the offending pants along with the “bulge”. Men are intimidated by these images because 1) most of us are either buttery blubber-boys or eight-stone weaklings and 2) our bulges are more like mild swellings.

Enter JBS, a Danish menswear company specialising in pants and boxer shorts that does away with the chiselled abs and stuffed-pocket style adverts and instead gives us what we want - scantily-clad women. Their latest campaign features a series of females in various states of undress, wearing or holding JBS underwear, promoting the idea that “women like these pants and if I wear a pair, they’ll like me too”.

However, what I do find disconcerting is that some of the women appear to be smelling them. No sane women would ever pick up a pair of men’s pants and have a good sniff…

Happy Birthday Junting!!!!!
Hope you’re enjoying yourself lots there!!

The Drummer

Starring: Tony Leung Ka Fai, Angelica Lee, Jaycee Chan, Josie Ho, Roy Cheung

Directed By: Kenneth Bi

Released By: 11th October 2007

Run Time: 119 mins.

Genre: Drama

A movie that combines the stunning art of Chinese drumming with Triad dealings?
This compelling story follows Sid, a reckless rascal who is raised in a Hong Kong triad family. He flees to Taiwan upon enraging a mob boss. Hiding out in the mountains, he encounters and joins a group of drummers whose mesmerising art, rigorous physical training, and austere way of life eventually transform him into an extraordinary young man. Sid’s independence from the triad life is profoundly challenged, however, when a twist of fate awaits him back home in Hong Kong and forces him to choose between loyalty to his family and his new found faith in himself.

The Italian

Starring: Kolya Spiridonov, Andrei Yelizarov, Sasha Sirotkin, Vladimir Shipov, Denis Moiseenko

Directed By: Andrei Kravchuk

Released By: 4th October 2007

Run Time: 99 mins.

Genre: Drama

For every Russian orphan, the chance to be adopted is a dream come true and freedom from hopeless poverty. Six-year-old Vanya Solntsev earns the envy of his peers at the orphanage when a wealthy Italian couple decides to adopt him. Serene life under the Mediterranean sun awaits him, but the boy has other hopes. After discovering that his mother is still alive, Vanya embarks on a perilous and unknown journey to find his kin. Pursued by orphanage staff and the police, the determined runaway must find courage in the sliver of hope and face the most difficult challenge of his young life. This incredible story is inspired by true events.

The Italian is not an easy film to watch at first - is there anything sadder than an orphan? - but as it goes along, you stop thinking about him as an orphan and start seeing him for what he truly is, a heroic little bugger.

One of the best foreign movies I have seen in ages is about a little Russian kid who escapes from a grimy rural orphanage to find the mother who abandoned him.

The acting - particularly by this six year old kid and the other inmates of the institution is so natural you feel you are watching an expose of orphanages in Russia today.

Go see this movie - this kid will break your heart!

Movie Review (A+)

I finally got home at around 5pm after a 8 days ICT.

My reservist unit is Tuas Defense Squadron and our job is to guard Tuas Naval Base. Basically, duties involve vehicle checks, scanning for bomb threats, sentry posts, prowling, etc - very much like professional security guards.

Glad that quite a few other old NS buddies from Changi Naval Base were posted to the same unit as me. I made some new friends. This is the enjoyable part of reservist, catching up with old friends and as well as making new friends.

The bad part is the regimentation.

I find it especially irritating that some of the NS man still have not ‘wake up their idea’ that when asked to be punctual, they tend to be very late. Isit that my English is so difficult to understand or isit they are deaf? Guys like me go back for reservist - we see it as doing the nation a favour and we serve because we love our nation, Singapore. So please, for God’s sake just do as wat I say and finish this ICT. U guys really make my life so difficult. Fine, if u guys want to make my life so difficultivethe next time, I can have 101 ways to make yours worst! Trust me! Some of you here, lucky one married, even some lucky one already have children, already an adult, why still behave like a child.

The food from Singapore Food Industries (SFI) was as usual - horribly bad. They served us with fried food covered with extremely generous serving of chilli sauce for practically every single lunch and dinner. Weather was scorching hot lor… eat these already surely lao sai one. How come they never think about it?

One lesson I learn after this ICT - not to keep deferring.

Eventually, I will still need to complete whatever I deferred. Better to clear them now while I am still young.

One down, 9 more high-key to go.

Bless me.

Oh, and it’s back to work tomolo.

Quite jittery to open up my mailbox and see the explosion of incoming emails… afterall, I am a civilian, not a full-time soldier.

HELLO ARMANI!!!

A total surprise when I woke up and flipped through the papers today…
(Yes, I actually read the papers, FYI!)

OH MY GOD!!!
THE ARMANI-SAMSUNG PHONE!!!
AAAHHH!!!~~~

A phone with one of my favourite labels…
Such a pleasant surprise in the morning indeed! Haha…

Signature Elegance & simplicity…
Full touch-screen user interface
(just like Prada)
Giorgio Armani desgined
Samsung Mobile
3 megapix cam
Lovely carrier included…
Rape alarm?!?!?!?!

What more can you ask for from Mr Armani himself?!

Well, the price of such a designer phone is steep as well, priced round 650 Euros = S$1400.
And it will be launced in November in Europe and January 2008 in other countries (ie S’pore!) Yeah!
Like such a great time to be launched eh? All the hongbao money will come in handy then! ;D

BUT it’s a Samsung phone after all… I used to love Samsung phones but not quite now… Maybe the Armani phone will change that thought after all… ;D

More or less, each label has already come up with their very unique phone…
Prada / LG
CK / Samsung
Versace / Nokia
D&G / Motorola
GA / Samsung

What’s next?
The Gucci phone?
The Chanel phone?
The LV phone?

Hmmm… Certainly sounds lovely isnt it?

And I just can’t wait! X)
