Set in Baltimore during the 1960s dance TV craze, a zaftig high school hair hopper, Tracy Turnblad, graduates from outsider to celebrity trendsetter and along the way she stars on “The Corny Collins Show,” wins the heart of resident hunk Link Larkin and kicks down the barriers for black and white integration on local television.

Great movie, haven’t seen such talents in musical since Grease! This movie is just one that will quite literally blow your hair away! Michelle preffier was great, didn’t know that James Madren can dance and sing so well added with a colgate smile. Also, Zac Efron with his twitching hairdo and god befallen smile. Also, the new actress Nikki is just a refreshing change to the steoro hollywood babe. John Travolta is woman for a change! I left the cinema feeling light and jumpy… from the songs and dance… U just can’t stop the beat!!! Do watch it even if you are not the musical type…

Hostel: Part II

Starring: Lauren German, Bijou Phillips, Heather Matarazzo

Directed By: Eli Roth

Released By: 9th August 2007

Run Time: 94 mins.

Genre:Thriller / Horror

This sequel begins right where “Hostel” (2005) left off, filling us in on the whereabouts of lone survivor, Paxton. But before long, we see that gender roles are reversed and we are travelling with sensible Beth, hedonistic Whitney, and virginal Lorna. After tussling with a gaggle of shifty men on a train, they meet Axelle, a gorgeous woman who persuades them to follow her to a rejuvenating spa in Slovakia. As the trio checks into the same infamous hostel, we are shown the inner workings of the previously mysterious torture club. Once the girls are put up on the auction block, online bidding begins among the clubs members - who are revealed to be prominent international businesspeople. After Beth and Whitney are won by type-A American corporate jerk Todd, who believes that killing someone will give him power, and his reluctant associate, Stuart, the film shifts to the preparations for their inaugural slayings within the bloody walls of the warehouse.

I usually enjoy gore on horror films, but… sometimes I feel the gore is only used to make us forget we are watching a movie with a weak story. For that thing, I have found too simple a lot of films about the torture of generic characters. The first part of Hostel was one of that films. I liked the special effects and I appreciated director Eli Roth’s intention but I was bored during the first 45 minutes and the story was weak. For that thing, I expected very little from Hostel Part 2 but I took a very big surprise with it and I think it’s better than the first part and intelligent. The story sounds similar to the first Hostel but a lot of subtle differences make the second part much better. The characters’ development is better and the villains are greatly used. It shows how the torture ”bussiness” works and we see the clients’ disturbing motivations. So, the villains from this film go beyond than the generic villains from the first part. The black humor is very twisted and it culminates on a brilliant ending. The only fail I found on this movie was the tedious scene of a carnival. It was a little bit long and it could have been edited form the movie.Hostel Part 2 is a great horror film, very fun, and much better than the first part. And the best thing of all, it endorses the gore with an interesting story.

881

Starring: YannYann Yeo, Mindee Ong, LingLing Liu, YuWu Qi

Directed By: Royston Tan

Released By: 9th August 2007

Run Time: 110 mins.

Genre: Drama / Music

“881″ tell the story of The Papaya sisters who are two childhood friends who grew up mesmerised by the flitter and glamour of ‘ge-tai’.

‘Ge-tais’ are usually set up during the Lunar 7th Month ‘Ghost Festival’ for the purpose of appeasing the ‘Hungry Spirits’ which are released once every year. Ge-tai singers will rotate between the ge-tais in different estates and these days it is slowly becoming a sun-set trade.

I have never been to a ge-tai before, and one of my friends at the movie pointed out that the movie was quite well made as far as the costumes were concerned. They were elaborate as those of the real ‘ge-tai’ artistes.

I enjoyed the whole thing very much. The next time,I pass by a getai, I would slow down my steps and enjoy the show…

A rare local film that managed to keep a fine balance between being overly artistic or getting too commercialized. A very interesting glimpse into the lives of ge-tai artistes. The colourful display of costumes is really an eye-opener for the uninitiated audience. Mocking the fight & jealousy between the artistes with the humourous use of graphics. Not to forget the melodious hokkien ge-tai tunes!!! I take it as a very rare opportunity for me to be able to listen to these old tunes and read the lyrics (in both English and Chinese at the same time) and appreciate their meanings. Most importantly, this movie seeks to highlight the beauty (and sometimes, kinda tragic) nature of human relationships. Be it the love between two close friends who are closer than sisters; love between men & women; love between real sisters; love between friends; love between parent and child…..

What I like about the movie is that the director does not create a big hoo-haa out of these relationships, the feelings just flow almost naturally, without the need for clear definitions. I don’t think my review would do the movie justice. I wouldn’t want to over-rate the film, but I would invite you to watch this film, and render support to the sincere producers of this film.

不能说的秘密

Starring: Lun-Mei Kwai, Jay Chou, Anthony Wong

Directed By: Jay Chou

Released By: 8th August 2007

Run Time: 100 mins.

Genre:Romance / Drama

The first day Lun (Chou) enters Tamkang Secondary School, he meets Yu (Kwai Lun-Mei) in the music room when she is playing a mysterious piano solo. The two become intimate friends and spend a lot of time together. He often asks her “What’s the melody you played the first day we met?” but Yu unfailingly replies: “That’s my secret.” One day, Lun asks Yu to meet him in the music room but Yu never showed up. Lun cannot find her. Later, Lun sees Yu in an old photograph and what surprises him is that Yu is standing next to his father, Chiu (Anthony Wong) in the photo!

Storyline wasn’t that smooth.
I can’t say it was a horrible show nor I could say that it’s a fantastic. Some parts of the shows doesn’t play along with other part of the show, therefore not smooth in the sense. I still think it’s a good try though.

But I must admit Jay & Kwai were quite cute and sweet in the show. The little senseless interaction between them makes you edge up a gentle smile and it is indeed very refreshing, or an eye-opener to see Jay being cute.

Anthony Wong as usual, he’s damn funny. I love especially, how he consoles Jay. Noticed from another review on what Anthony said, "People who dont listen to music are bad guys". I wonder if this rings a ear to fellow jay fans… but it seems an adaption and a slight reformating to what Jay once said, infamously,
"学音乐的小孩不会变坏".

弹头 & 阿郎 from 南拳妈妈 provide the light moments which this semi-sad/solemn/sweet love story needs.

The piano duel between 宇豪 of 南拳妈妈 & Jay, was simply fascinating.

The love story between the two lovers is a very fast going, love story. Its really sweet first love… makes you wanna fall in love like them in the show too, but the plot twist probably… but how many can claim a love like that? Not Jay himself, as he said.

The show felt Harry Potter-ish… but the movie itself really isnt so especially towrds the ending scene which gave the Harry Potter-ish feel, it was a bit rushed and the focus was simply only on Jay. The visual effects, should be considered alright for Asian standards but compared to the ones of Spiderman those, at least we do know they are MIC, Made In Computer.
