Han-na is a phone sex employee as well as lip sync vocalist for Ammy, a famous Korean pop singer. Instead of being famous for her amazing vocal talent, Hanna hides behind in her little room. Ammy humiliates her in front of Sang-jun with whom Han-na is in love with. Desperately, Han-na decides that it’s time to get a head-to-toe plastic surgery makeover. When she comes back from hospital, no one recognizes her. She soon earns her own record label with Sang-jun and becomes famous. Soon, Sang-jun finds out about her plastic surgery (she tried to hide it from him and when he asked if she went under the knife, she said no). Jenny (Han-na’s alter Ego) soon loses who she really was. The time came for her concert came and Jenny broke down. Not knowing who she really was, she broke down in front of millions. On that very stage, she told everyone who she really was. The fat and ugly Han-na. People cheered for her saying that it was alright. She soon realized that she was the same Han-na. Han-na released a new album under the name Han-na, not Jenny. All ended well after that.

This movie is able to bring a complex issue onto the audience and present it in such a warm, light-hearted and understanding manner. At first, I thought I would be in for a superficial and callous movie about plastic surgery. OH was I ever more wrong. 200 Pound Beauty manages to capture the complexity of the issue without it ever bearing down on the film. It is an extremely funny, witty and light-hearted commentary on the trend of plastic surgery in Korea. And it does so with grace, respect and understanding of the subject matter. Everyone must watch this film! No other film in recent history has ever captured my heart and imagination so well as this one did. I dare say it rivals the storytelling of My Sassy Girl; one of my all-time favorite films. This is a “MUST WATCH” for all those who love romantic comedies.

As I read the CNN article listing the victims of Monday’s Virginia Tech shooting, tears streamed down my face. They still are now. I didn’t know any of them personally. And yet I feel like I knew every single one of them. They were our best friends, our sisters, our fathers, our beloved professors, our sons, and our soul mates. I read their biographies and the warm, touching remarks left by those who knew them. Every single one of those people was loved, was gifted, had something to contribute to the world in their own unique way.

I can’t stop thinking about how fleeting life is. In an instant—gone. It makes you reevaluate your own life. Your friends. Your loved ones. Your family. Your faith. Your God.

God. It’s so easy to ask, “God, why did you let that happen?” Too easy. I find myself asking questions like that when I read about/see poverty, children suffering, etc… “God, why don’t you DO something?” And of course it’s always reflected back to me, “Why don’t YOU do something?

What’s done is done. Now we must come together to support those who are grieving those we’ve lost. We must go beyond the cliché and truly live each moment like it is our last. If anything, take this time to reevaluate your life and how you treat those around you—loved ones or strangers. What are you doing with your time on earth?

I am grieving those we lost on Monday, though I didn’t personally know them. But as we are all brothers and sisters in a global community, I feel the loss. And I lift my prayers up for them and their loved ones.

The Number 23

Hannibalrising

Jim Carrey will play a man who becomes obsessed and haunted upon reading a book that seems to be about his life but ends with a murder. The number 23 is woven throughout the plot.

Veering as far away from the comedic genre as he ever has, Carrey plays a husband and father who becomes obsessed with a book that tells him everything in his life is linked to the number 23. As the days progress, he becomes more and more convinced that he is somehow connected to this book. The relationship with his wife (Virginia Madsen) becomes strained, and he starts to have nightmares of him murdering her. Is he becoming the character in the book, a man who is driven by the number 23 to obsession and murder, or is it all just a paranoid delusion?

Here’s our homage to the film’s tortured permutations of the numerals 2 and 3: 3 minus 2 equals 1. And there is only ONE reason to see this movie: YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BETTER TO DO!

Duck Soupie

Rocher Duck Rice is one duck rice stall I just HAVE to introduce to everyone. MY colleague, INSISTS that their duck rice are nothing special and not even nice. But shhhhhh, come in closer and I’ll tell you their secret because the gem in this stall is not their duck rice, nor the duck meat, but the soup!!! Haha…

The soup is one of the best herbal soup I’ve ever drank; the second best coming from a damn good duck rice stall in Bukit Timah Plaza which I will try to post if I get the chance to go down there. Haha… The soup here is really rich and full of herbal goodiness yet not to the point of being bitter at all. It’s so concentrated with herbal essence that I think theres got to be a thousand herbs squeezed into the pot. Just kidding… haha…

KK… Back to the soup huh! Hey, the soup is really good and I would gladly drink it on its own and dunk it in rice and slurp it up like porridge. Hey teochew duck porridge! Now thats an idea…

The meat though is a little on the tough side and nothing much to write about.

Oh yeah they have an assortment of side dishes too like tau kwa, kiam chye, pork intestines, pig skin, stir-fry cabbage and some other stuff.

Heres a pic of the duck rice. Its funny that their duck meat come in chunks rather than slices. The pig skin ordered by my friend is covered in a layer of fat which apparently is not very good for health… Okay! I can’t believe that I wrote so much for a bowl of herbal soup from a duck rice stall, but I did. SO GO AND TRY IT NOW!!!
